What is poetry?

Different poets define poetry differently. Wordsworth defined poetry as “the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings;” Emily Dickinson said, “If I read a book and it makes my body so cold no fire ever can warm me, I know that is poetry;” and Dylan Thomas defined poetry this way: “Poetry is what makes me laugh or cry or yawn, what makes my toenails twinkle, what makes me want to do this or that or nothing.”

Thousands of poets over the ages have given us enough poetry to fill textbooks, lecture halls and the minds of those who read their verse. But still, what the hell is this thing which has bewitched thousands into subversion. My Granddad used to say, “If you catch the poetry virus once, you will never be able to let go. Never” That time I laughed at him But today the truthfulness of his words move me. Not that I am sorry that the virus of poetry got me. But because I got it so late.

Look at the wind, observe it. You can feel it, at times see it. But can you catch it?
Because if you do. It wont be wind anymore. The case is the same with poetry. Poetry is no scientific mumbo jumbo that can be defined  in a particular way. Every person is unique, and the way every unique reader understands every unique poem is unique too. For me, poetry is everything.  Poetry is undiluted  emotion, where no one tries to hide something. Its pure.

Tell me what does poetry mean to *you*?
