When Alzheimer’s Patients Repeat, Repeat, Repeat

“It’s about to drive me nuts,” you think, when your Alzheimer’s parent repeats the same information or asks the same question time after time after time, with, if you’re lucky, five minutes duration between.

However, this is the nature of the disease at some point.  With some it lasts for several months; others persist for only a short time.  I discovered, it helped me develop patience.

Auntie and Mother couldn’t help it.  They didn’t recall they’d asked that question or made that comment.  They often didn’t register the answer I gave them.

You can:

  • Try to divert their attention
  • Ignore them
  • Involve another family member
  • Give them a doll or stuffed toy to talk to
  • Learn to turn it to laughter

What do you do to get through this stage of Alzheimer’s with your family member?

Hello world!

Welcome to Alzheimer’s News & Notes.  I shall be blogging about this topic for Alzheimer’s patients and caregivers, in hopes of giving you information, resources and encouragement.

I was a caregiver for my mom and my aunt, in their homes, in my home and in a nursing home.  I learned to appreciate them in this stage of their lives and hope I brought joy into their Alzheimer’s world.

I’ve written blogs about Alzheimer’s and caregiving.  My stories have been published in newspapers, magazines and anthologies.  I also  am author of the book, When We Become the Parent to Our Parents.

My husband and I often give talks and presentations to caregiver groups, as well as the general public.

I hope you find my blog here helpful, informative and encouraging.
